Amundsen Students Peer into Microscopic Cells at Madison Workshop

About 40 juniors got a taste of college life when they traveled to the University of Wisconsin in Madison earlier this month.

While there, Amundsen High School students got hands-on at a cell biology workshop. Graduate students and professors showed how microscopy, digital imaging and molecular biology are all used for cell cancer research.

“Year after year students rave about this trip,” Amundsen teacher Jenny Sider said in an email to Patch. “They say the lab experience teaches how science research helps solve real world problems.”

Hosts from the college also showed students around campus. The high schoolers asked questions about university life, admissions and financial aid.

“The trip motivates them to improve grades and opens their minds to opportunities beyond high school,” Sider said. Amundsen teachers have been coordinating the trip for students for the last five years.
