Queen of Angels Earns National Recognition as Blue Ribbon School

The 103-year-old school joins less than 300 across the country named to the list and the only neighborhood school to earn the award.

A Lincoln Square school is one of only 286 in the country recognized for its high academic achievement.

The U.S. Department of Education announced Queen of Angels as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2013.

Queen of Angels earned the award for its high performance—placing in the top 15 percent of schools in both math and reading assessments.

“It takes an entire school community to be able to accomplish what this award stands for in regard to providing excellence in education,” principal Julia Kelly said in a news release.

Not only is Queen of Angels the lone Lincoln Square school to achieve the recognition, but it’s one of only 50 private institutions on the list.

The U.S. Department of Education gives Blue Ribbon status to elementary, middle and high schools for performing at very high levels or achieving significant improvements.

“A National Blue Ribbon Schools flag overhead has become a mark of excellence in education recognized by everyone from parents to policy-makers in thousands of communities,” according to the U.S. Department of Education.  

The 103-year-old Catholic private school at 4520 N. Western Ave. joins 286 others across the country.
