Community Invited to Amundsen High School Homecoming Week

The Vikings are hosting a community night, pep rally and football game for this year's Homecoming.

Amundsen High School is alive with Homecoming spirit and all of Lincoln Square is invited.

Join the Vikings as they celebrate Homecoming with not just a football game, but also a pep rally and community night for the first time.

“We’re looking to improve our performance here at the school and a part of it is thinking about why kids come to school and part of that is the positive environment,” Activities Director Erik Olson said. “It’s just part of a high school tradition to have a homecoming festivity throughout the week.”

Olson, along with the Student Activities Committee, planned the festivities that include a pep rally with a parade of athletes and seniors around Jorndt Stadium.

The students raised money for Homecoming themselves, Olson said. Those running for the royalty court had to get recommendations from teachers and sell raffle tickets for Viking apparel. Olson said the tickets raised $2,200.

“The students are very engaged and happy; they can see the money going right back into the school,” he said.

About 80 percent of students dressed up for Bummy Day, the first of five spirit days at the school. The rest of the week includes Nerd Day, Twin Day, Wacky Tacky Day and Viking Spirit Day.

As part of the celebration, the school is hosting a community night on Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees can meet more than 200 representatives from school athletic teams and clubs. First year Principal Anna Pavichevich will discuss her vision for the school and Olson will present facts about academics.

Parents can also learn about joining the Friends of Amundsen, a nonprofit group that began in June to support the school and act as liaisons to the community.

President Stephen Reynolds said the organization’s goal is to create a kindergarten through 12th grade experience, connecting public and private elementary schools to the high school.

“This is one of many things that we can do to open the doors to the community,” Reynolds said. “They can come to the football game, pep rally, parade, but importantly at its core is inviting the community and inbound elementary schools to come and visit the school.”
